Crispy Fried Tofu with Ginger-Sesame Sauce

View Recipe
Quick vegan tofu recipes are my personal favorite when my husband has planned to eat meat and I am not planning to cook two separate detailed meals (one with meat for him and vegetarian for me). So, I am always hunting for easy vegetarian recipes to pamper myself after hard day at work and sometimes after hard day in kitchen.
Often, fried tofu is also one of my favorite way of feeding some vegetarian soy protein to my family (few days a week we don't eat meat, during those days vegan protein or lentils are the way to go). This Ginger-Sesame Tofu recipe will transport you to P.F. Chang's or any of your favorite Chinese dinner. I often eat eggplant-tofu at P.F. Chang's and love it for the silky sweet, spicy, gingery - Ginger-Sesame Sauce sauce. Think of this ginger-sesame sauce as starch-less version of that.
Super easy to make and so delicious, sauce comes together in 2 minutes. It tastes best with crispy tofu. Crispy tofu soaks in lot of sauce and tastes very flavorful. Ginger-Sesame sauce will also go well with roasted or deep-fried eggplant or pan-fried chicken tenders. In-fact, if I have some guest coming over and have no time cook for two of us. I often make this quick sauce and shallow fry some tofu to munch while cleaning/preparing food for guests.
You can find a lot of vegetarian and vegan, really quick recipes on this blog. But, if you are planning to eat some Chinese at home, do give this quick recipe a try. I bet, you will be making it again and again.

So, fry some crispy tofu, pour some sweet and spicy sauce and pamper yourself!!

Ingredients

  • Mix Vegetables (steamed vegetables or rice for serving)
  • Ginger-Sesame Sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 2 tsp Ginger (finely grated)
  • 2 Green Onion (thinly sliced green and white of scallions)
  • 1.5 tbsp Soy Sauce (mixed with 1 tbsp water)
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes (crushed red pepper)
  • 2 Garlic (2 small garlic cloves, fine minced)
  • Crispy Tofu
  • 0.5 lbs Tofu (10 ounce packet of firm tofu)
  • 4 tbsp Canola Oil (for shallow frying)

Directions

  • 1. In a small bowl, whisk the soy sauce with the sugar, red pepper, garlic, sesame oil, and grate in fresh ginger.
  • 2. Slice the tofu crosswise into 6 to 8 thin slabs. Dry the tofu with paper towel, pressing until excess moisture removed (about 5 minutes).
  • 3. In a large skillet, heat 1/4 inch of oil until shimmering. Add the tofu slabs and cook over moderate heat, turning once until they are browned and crispy. Drain the fried tofu on paper towels.
  • 4. Spoon the ginger-sesame sauce over the fried tofu and sprinkle sliced scallions. Serve with steamed rice or on side with steamed veggies.

Savita's Recipe Notes:

This sauce is on little spicy side. Crushed Red Pepper is important ingredient in this recipe. However, you can first add less (say 1/2 tsp), taste and then add more. When served over rice, ginger-sesame sauce dripped in steamed rice from soaking tofu tastes delicious and balance the spiciness very well.
